Mumps Prevention

Preventing the Spread of Mumps

People who have swelling of the neck and fever or people who have fever and respiratory symptoms following exposure to a person with mumps may be infected with the mumps virus. People who are potentially infectious with mumps should minimize the risk of transmission by limiting contact with other people who may be susceptible to the disease. Contact should be limited until a medical diagnosis has been established excluding mumps or until the symptoms resolve completely.

People who are potentially infectious should especially avoid public transportation (including commercial airlines) and crowded indoor areas. Patients who suspect that they may have mumps should call ahead before visiting a clinic or hospital so that arrangements can be made for a healthcare provider to attend to the patient without exposing others in the facility to mumps.
