Mumps is a viral disease that often results in fever and swelling of the neck. In addition to these classic symptoms, mumps can cause things like:
- Muscle aches
- Loss of appetite.
Antibiotics and other medications are unable to treat this condition, since it is caused by a virus. Treatment involves managing a person's symptoms while the body fights the infection. Thanks to the mumps vaccine, this disease is rare in the United States (under 1,000 cases per year).
