Mumps and Pregnancy

Preventing Mumps During Pregnancy

The most effective mumps prevention method in pregnant women is the mumps vaccine. In the United States, the vaccine is most commonly given as part of the MMR vaccine (also known as measles, mumps, rubella vaccine). However, women should not get the MMR vaccine, or any other mumps vaccine, during pregnancy or while trying to conceive.

To reduce the chances of mumps during pregnancy, some suggestions include:

  • Wash hands well and often with soap, and teach children to wash their hands, too
  • Do not sharing eating utensils
  • Surfaces that are frequently touched (toys, doorknobs, tables, counters, etc.) should also be regularly cleaned with soap and water or with cleaning wipes
  • Limit your contact with people who have known mumps symptoms.

Make sure to talk to your doctor about any other questions you have about mumps and pregnancy.
